I'm interested in getting into classical music. Any suggestions on where I should start?
I prefer full orchestral stuff than one or two instruments, and I find I enjoy more complex harmonies, though not a requirement.

An excerpt from an email from my mom: Weird thing happened last week. The FAA came to the house and said that we had something emitting signals that was disturbing the channel on which pilots use to communicate with the airport control tower during take-off and landing. They said they have been looking for the source and cause since October last year and finally traced it to our house. The group that came last week were specialists from Seattle because, apparently, the locals couldn't find the source (our house). John helped me turn off the wireless internet, but that wasn't it. So they came into the house and traced it to some equipment from Direct TV that is up in the attic. Anyway, everything is ok now.

I'm in the middle of quals. Life sucks.
In other news, our windows are frozen. From the inside. We keep our apartment at 73 (hooray free heating), which causes condensation on our windows. And it's so cold outside that it freezes the condensation through the window. There's a solid sheet of ice covering our entire window.
Probably a pretty normal thing for places with super-cold weather, but still, this is kind of weird.

Ribena is a blackcurrant drink that I used to drink as a kid.
Today, I realized it can make fun mixed drinks too:
1 shot Ribena syrup 2 shots water (the 1 shot Ribena is normally diluted with 8oz water) 1/2 shot Di Saronno Amaretto 1/2 shot Triple sec 1 shot vodka ice
yay!

For those of you who are Japanese inclined, check out www.mixi.jp. It's like Friendster/Facebook/whatever social networking site, but in Japanese! Email or comment if you want an invite :-p

I am in Boston, where I will be living for the next 5-6 years for school. We drove all the way from Seattle in a Penske truck, and stopped in St. Louis to visit sugardissolver, among other places.
Driving in a 16 ft rental truck in Boston, where half of the roads don't allow trucks due to low clearance, and armed only with a map, was not pretty.
I am overwhelmed with orientation, unpacking, organizing and buying furniture.
My apartment is Japanese sized, and it's horribly expensive. It's on-campus housing, which means it's under market value, but it's still expensive, especially since I'm now a poor graduate student.
Ok, well, time for laundry.

I guess I should update. Since stuff has happened since the last time I posted last year. So, in no particular order...
Came back from Japan in September. Stopped in Thailand. 'Twas fun, to say the least.
Kali visited.
Got into a major accident. Not a scratch on me. Car runs fine, with primarily external damage. Hooray for German technology.
Applied to grad school. Took advantage of graduate schools' recruiting weekends to get one and a half free trips to visit Kali. Decided on MIT.
Family issues.
Got addicted to Law and Order and its derivatives. It didn't really help that about 6 episodes were showing each day on 3 different channels on satellite tv.
Got addicted to 24.
Party-going put on hiatus. Got tired of trance/hard house and people being too cliquish, or sketchy in certain cases.
Trying hard to fight senioritis. Problem is that 2 of the 3 classes I'm taking is being taught by my advisor who I'm trying to convince to pay me for lab work this summer.
That's about all I have to say.

a morning of looking up biotechnology related Japanese words and squinting at Kanji radicals in JEdict, while waiting for cells to grow.
word of the day, which rivals Albert's sickness:
赤血球生成促進因子 [せっけっきゅうせいせいそくしんいんし] erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone that stimulates the growth of red blood cells
sekkokkyuuseiseisokushininshi
try to say that 10 times fast :-)

What does a former exchange student and current Apple employee who's just stopping by my host parent's house during a business trip, bring as omiyage?
A 12 inch iBook G4.
Come visit me some time, I say

I'm sitting in my host parents' kitchen, using the internet, listening to the r+b channel of their 300+ channel world radio when all of a sudden, the songs changed to Spanish! How bizzare.
The stranger thing is that the voices sound like the originals

So I'm not exaggerating one bit when I say that since I came to japan, EVERY SINGLE japanese person I've met with the exception of the center staff, has said or agreed with someone who said that I look like Katori Shingo.
One girl even put "Shingo" instead of my name in her keitai (cell phone)
It's basically become a given that any Japanese person I meet will say that at some point. It's just a matter of when.
heh.
